Family, friends, and numerous officials came together to bid farewell to 34-year-old Lena Samaras, daughter of former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, after her sudden passing last Thursday.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the Church of Saints Theodoroi. During the service, Antonis Samaras delivered a heartfelt eulogy, asking:
“What can a father say who loses his child? What can a mother say who loses her flesh and blood? What can a brother say who loses his other half when his soul loses its most faithful companion?”
At around 1:40 p.m., Lena’s coffin was carried from the church, followed closely by her father, mother Georgia, and brother Konstantinos. Those gathered outside offered words of comfort, telling the family to “stay strong” — the same phrase that had been repeated earlier when the former Prime Minister arrived at the First Cemetery of Athens, where Lena was laid to rest.
The service was attended by many dignitaries and political figures, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, all present to honour her memory.
According to official reports, Lena suffered a sudden epileptic seizure that triggered cardiac arrest. Despite receiving immediate medical care and the full efforts of hospital staff, she passed away later that night.
Friends and family paid tribute to her on social media. Her friend Lilian Vildiridi wrote on Instagram:
“Safe journey, my angel. For me, you will always be unique. Twenty-nine years together… and now? Now? You suddenly flew to the neighbourhood of angels…”
Her brother, Kostas Samaras, also shared a deeply emotional farewell alongside a photo of the two of them.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to charities Lena supported:
