Piraeus on Alert Over Suspected Gas Leak at Fuel Station – Apartment Buildings Evacuated, Roads Closed

Authorities in Piraeus have launched a major emergency response following reports of a suspected gas leak at a fuel station, prompting the precautionary evacuation of nearby residential buildings and extensive traffic restrictions.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Omiridou Skylitsi Street and Pythagora Street, where emergency services rushed to assess the situation after receiving reports of a possible gas leak.

Fire Service crews, police officers, and specialized technical teams were immediately deployed to the scene. As a precautionary measure, neighboring apartment buildings were evacuated while experts carried out safety inspections of the fuel station and the surrounding area. The station has remained closed during the operation.

Traffic Restrictions Implemented

Greek authorities introduced emergency traffic measures to ensure public safety and facilitate the work of first responders.

Vehicle traffic has been suspended:

• On Omiridou Skylitsi Street, from the junction with Grigoriou Lambraki Street.
• On 34th Infantry Regiment Street, from the junction with Distomou Street.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and follow police instructions until the emergency operation is completed.

Metro Line 1 and Tram Services Disrupted

The incident has also affected public transportation.

Following instructions from the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.), STASY, the Athens Urban Rail Transport Company, temporarily suspended operations at Piraeus Station on Metro Line 1 (ISAP). Train services are currently operating only between Faliro and Kifisia.

In addition, Tram Line 7 services have been suspended between Piraeus (Akti Poseidonos) and Moschato, with trams continuing to operate on the Asklipieio Voulas – Kallithea section.

Authorities Continue Safety Checks

Fire Service specialists are conducting measurements and inspections to determine whether a gas leak has occurred or whether another factor triggered the emergency response.

Officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the incident, while emergency measures remain in place until all safety checks are completed.
