Greece’s electricity system is facing one of its toughest tests of the summer, with power demand surpassing 10,600 megawatts (MW) for a third consecutive day as an intense heatwave continues to grip much of the country. The unprecedented surge in electricity consumption is being driven primarily by the widespread use of air conditioning amid exceptionally high temperatures.
According to projections from the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO/ADMIE), the national electricity grid has remained under sustained pressure throughout the week, with demand reaching its highest levels during the midday and early afternoon hours.
Grid Operators on High Alert
Electricity transmission and distribution operators remain on heightened alert to ensure uninterrupted power supply despite the extraordinary demand.
Technical teams have been deployed across the country to respond immediately to any potential failures in both the transmission and distribution networks. Authorities say the system continues to operate safely, although the prolonged heatwave is placing exceptional stress on the infrastructure.
Heatwave Drives Record Consumption
Meteorologists attribute the spike in electricity demand to persistently high temperatures affecting large parts of Greece, leading households and businesses to rely heavily on cooling systems.
The combination of extreme temperatures and continuous air-conditioning use has resulted in electricity consumption exceeding 10,600 MW, one of the highest levels recorded during the current summer season.
Energy experts note that while the grid is experiencing exceptional pressure, Greece currently maintains sufficient generating capacity and reserve resources to meet demand.
No Immediate Risk of Widespread Blackouts
Despite the heavy load on the electricity network, energy officials stress that there is currently no indication of an imminent nationwide blackout.
Continuous monitoring, reserve generation capacity, and operational coordination between transmission and distribution operators are helping maintain system stability during the ongoing heatwave. Nevertheless, authorities continue to urge consumers to use electricity responsibly during peak demand hours whenever possible.
