Mitsotakis: Difficult Days Lie Ahead as Wildfires Rage, “We Stand by Those Affected”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis acknowledged that Greece is facing extremely challenging days as multiple wildfires continue to burn across the country, pledging the government's full support for residents, businesses and local communities affected by the devastating blazes.

Speaking during a government meeting on the ongoing emergency, Mitsotakis praised the efforts of firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, volunteers and the Armed Forces, stressing that protecting human life remains the state's highest priority.

The Prime Minister assured those impacted by the fires that the government would move swiftly to support recovery efforts once the immediate danger subsides.

He emphasized that all available state resources would be mobilized to assist affected families, restore damaged infrastructure and help local businesses and agricultural producers recover from the destruction.

Mitsotakis paid tribute to the firefighters, volunteers, police officers, members of the Hellenic Coast Guard and military personnel who have been working around the clock under extremely difficult conditions.

He noted that Greece's firefighting forces continue to face multiple simultaneous fire fronts fueled by high temperatures, prolonged drought and strong winds, making this one of the most demanding periods of the summer fire season.

Climate Crisis Increasing the Challenge

The Prime Minister reiterated that climate change is making wildfires more frequent and more destructive across the Mediterranean, requiring constant investment in prevention, preparedness and emergency response.

He stressed that Greece has strengthened its Civil Protection mechanisms in recent years through increased personnel, improved coordination and expanded use of technology, while acknowledging that extreme weather conditions continue to test emergency services.
