Passenger traffic is picking up at Attica’s main ports on Saturday, as thousands of travelers take advantage of the final days of August for one last summer getaway before returning to their everyday routines.
The largest wave of departures is from Piraeus, while increased passenger traffic is also being recorded at Rafina and Lavrio, as well as on ferry routes serving the Saronic Gulf islands.
Around 27,000 Passengers Leaving Today
According to data from ferry operators and the Hellenic Coast Guard, around 27,000 passengers are expected to depart from Attica’s ports on Saturday.
Piraeus alone is expected to handle approximately 16,000 departing passengers, making it by far the busiest port for the latest wave of summer travelers.
Traffic is expected to remain elevated on Sunday as well. Overall, more than 80,000 travelers are expected to have departed from Attica’s ports between Friday and Sunday.
One Last Summer Break Before September
The figures suggest that Greeks still have a strong appetite for a final summer break, despite the continuing pressure from the high cost of living and elevated fuel prices.
For many travelers, the final weekend stretch of August offers one more opportunity to spend a few days on the islands before summer vacations give way to work, school and the return to normal routines.
Departures Pick Up After Days of Heavy Returns
The picture at Piraeus is beginning to shift compared with earlier in the week.
Until midweek, arrivals significantly outnumbered departures, as thousands of vacationers returned to Athens following their summer holidays.
The latest wave of outbound travelers could now begin to reverse that balance as people head to the islands for shorter, late-August breaks.
Traffic Around Piraeus Port Remains Smooth
Despite the increased number of passengers, traffic conditions around the Port of Piraeus remain relatively smooth.
Traffic Police and Coast Guard authorities have introduced measures to facilitate vehicle movement, and no significant delays have been reported so far on roads surrounding the port.
The situation is noticeably calmer than during the peak August 15 holiday period, when heavy congestion and long lines were recorded at ports across the country.
For thousands of travelers boarding ferries this weekend, however, the goal is simple: to make the most of the final days of the Greek summer before September arrives.
