Greece Battles Relentless Wildfires as Firefighters Hold the Line in Western Attica

Firefighters continued their round-the-clock battle against the massive wildfire in Western Attica, with hundreds of emergency personnel working to contain active fire fronts as strong winds and extreme heat kept conditions highly dangerous.

Throughout the night, ground crews, supported by aerial firefighting aircraft at first light, focused on preventing the flames from reaching additional settlements while tackling constant flare-ups across difficult terrain.

Hundreds of Firefighters on the Front Line

The largest firefighting operation remains concentrated in the Psatha–Porto Germeno area, where firefighters, forest commandos, volunteers and Civil Protection teams have been battling the blaze for days.

Bulldozers and engineering crews continued opening firebreaks in an effort to slow the fire's advance, while helicopters and aircraft resumed water-dropping missions as soon as weather conditions allowed.

Firefighting efforts remain extremely challenging as powerful winds repeatedly reignite hotspots and push the flames in different directions.

Authorities warned that weather conditions continue to favor the rapid spread of fire, forcing emergency services to remain on maximum alert across Western Attica and neighboring regions.

Several communities remain under close monitoring, with Civil Protection officials prepared to issue evacuation orders if conditions deteriorate.

Residents have been urged to follow official instructions, avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and stay informed through emergency alerts as firefighting operations continue.

Difficult Days Ahead

The wildfire has already destroyed homes, farmland and forest areas, while the recent collision of two firefighting helicopters over the Psatha fire highlighted the enormous risks faced by emergency crews battling one of Greece's most destructive wildfire outbreaks in recent years.
