The countdown has begun for the opening of the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria, with the five new stations set to welcome passengers on August 27.

The opening date was announced by Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas, as trial runs and final safety checks continue across the new section of the network.

The extension is one of the most important transport projects for eastern Thessaloniki and will add 4.8 kilometers of underground track to the city's metro system.

Five New Stations for Eastern Thessaloniki

The Kalamaria extension will add five stations to the network:

Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Mikra.

Once the extension enters commercial service, the Thessaloniki Metro will have a total of 18 stations, significantly expanding its reach into the city's eastern suburbs.

Mikra will become the network's new eastern terminus, giving residents of Kalamaria a direct metro connection toward central Thessaloniki.

The new line is also expected to reduce travel times and offer thousands of commuters an alternative to using their cars for daily journeys.

Trial Runs and Final Checks Underway

With the opening just days away, trial runs are now in full swing.

Technical teams are carrying out the final checks required before passenger services begin, with particular attention being paid to the safe integration of the Kalamaria extension with the existing metro network.

Testing had already begun earlier in August, initially during nighttime hours, before being expanded as the project entered its final phase.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas and Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos have both signaled that the project is now ready to move from testing to full operation.

August 27 Becomes the Key Date

The opening on Thursday, August 27 will mark the first major expansion of the Thessaloniki Metro since the original network entered service.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is also expected to be in Thessaloniki that day.

For Kalamaria, the extension is expected to make a tangible difference to everyday travel, providing faster access to the city center and easing pressure on some of eastern Thessaloniki's busiest roads.

Next Stop: Western Thessaloniki

With the Kalamaria extension nearing completion, attention is already turning to the next major phase of the city's metro development: the expansion toward western Thessaloniki.

The western extension is considered crucial to turning the metro into a broader metropolitan transport network, connecting some of the city's most densely populated districts with the center.

For now, however, all eyes are on August 27, when the first passengers are expected to travel through the five new stations and the Thessaloniki Metro enters the next chapter of its development.
